Earthlink-Sucks

In case you're wondering how I arrived at the title, let me tell you a story.

It begins several years ago... I needed an ISP (internet service provider) and chose Earthlink because they were pretty much everywhere. This was dial-up service when everyone and their cousin provided internet service via dial-up. When DSL became available in my area, I signed up and received internet access thru my DSL provider, QWEST. I used Earthlink while traveling for a while and then canceled it. At least I THOUGHT I had canceled it.

Fast forward SEVERAL YEARS...like at least 5. I discover that Earthlink is STILL billing me on my business credit card. Now, I KNOW what you're thinking, but I use my business credit card a LOT; a hundred transactions or more per month. Yes, I check the statement. But that insidious little $19.95 charge just didn't catch my eye.

Mia culpa, mia culpa, mia maxima culpa.

When I discovered my stupidity, I called them to "cancel" the account (again). I didn't whine about the YEARS of past charges, because that was due to sheer stupidity on my part. But I DID want the charges to cease. When I called I got someone that clearly did not speak English as their FIRST language. I explained that I wanted to cancel my account. They agreed, provided I could give them the name of my first pet. That's EASY. My first pets name was DUKE. A fox terrier that I had for 15 years. I've used that "password"/"validation" many times before. II was told that was not correct. I recited address, phone number, offered my Mother's maiden name. None of these were satisfactory. I asked to speak to a supervisor and got pretty much the same spiel (or run-around, depending on how you want to view it).

I repeated this process starting in May of 2008 and did so for several months. The charges continued to appear on my credit card. I called the credit card company and told them I wanted to stop the charges. I was told that was not possible, since they had a valid card # and were submitting valid charges.

Finally, after MONTHS of calling and complaining I decided to cancel the credit card and disputed the account charges.

Earthlink proceeded to send me a BILL in the MAIL. When I refused to pay them, because I haven't used the account for YEARS, they turned me over to a collection agency.

I'm going to pay the amount that THEY say is outstanding ONLY to protect my credit. But, I'm going to make sure that EVERYONE has access to this story so that HOPEFULLY, they won't do business with these crooked shiester Taliban rejects.

The people at Earthlink are unethical, deceitful and dishonest. If you're smart you won't do business with them. If you've been screwed by people like this yourself, do me a favor and pass this link on to your friends and relatives. If you've had an experience similar to mine, I'm sorry I didn't post this soon enough for you to benefit.

If you are unfortunate enough to work for Earthlink or represent them in some capacity. You have my sympathy.

Earthlink has hired Collection Company of America to do "collections" work. This makes them complicit in this internet scam. You can't call Earthlink directly because they don't post any phone numbers, but I urge you to call Collections of America at 800-836-3570. They'd love to hear from you, and they'll even pay for the call.. Collections of America is located at 700 Longwater Drive in Norwell, MA 02061. Stop by and say high if you're in the neighborhood. They'd love to hear from you. That's got to be a stressful job, pissing that many people off has got to make them unpopular with all sorts of people.

Here's their website.
